Let There Be Light and Consciousness from One Level of Soul to the Next

Isaac said,

If we had a goal, it would be to bring the unconscious to light, bring it to consciousness. The reason Shabbos and all Jewish holidays begin at nightfall is because we are bringing light into our darkness. Bringing more awareness.

When God said, “Let there be light,” it meant “Let there be consciousness.”

Question: If our progress in this life depends on becoming aware of our unconscious limitations, is this also true of the beings in other realms?

Yes, Isaac replied. In all worlds, all realms, the challenge is to become more and more conscious. Imagine three bottles of increasing size, and they are one inside the other, each with its own cork. Each contains seawater as well as its smaller bottle.

The smallest bottle is our physical existence. When we finish this existence, and the small bottle breaks, we are released into a larger space. We have an experience of expansion into more seawater. It feels liberating. We gain a wider perspective in the astral plane. Yet eventually we find we are limited by the next larger bottle.

All beings want to and need to increase awareness, in order to go beyond all the bottles. By the time we break all the bottles, we re-join the Unity of the Ocean. We melt into It, and we’re overjoyed to do so.

Watch and listen to your dreams. Dreams are often the best tool to uncover the unconscious. You might like to jot down a few descriptive words the moment you awaken, to strengthen your remembrance.

Question: Please explain more about the levels of the soul, of increasing consciousness. Are they like the bottles?

Yes, the levels of the soul are the Nefesh, the Ruach, the Neshama, the Chaya, and finally the Yehidah. Only the Yehidah is complete Union.

Among the many names for God, Elokim is the One who forms all things in the world of duality. This is a subject-object world, where the subject is your inner witness, looking at the objects.

Havayah is the name of God that means Unity, and God alone.

How to Get in Touch with Rahamim – Mercy, Balance, Intelligence, and Love

Isaac’s teaching continues –

Question: The meditation prayer you gave us – “Merciful Father, have mercy on me” – can you please tell us more about that?

“Harachaman rahem alai.” The prayer centers on the concept of “Rahamim,” which means balance. Not only balance but a kind of mercy that has intelligence and love.

Chesed (loving-kindness) always says “yes,” and Gevurah (discipline, strictness) says “no.” Gevurah makes good rules to follow. But as time goes by, old rules might be outgrown. Times change, and what may have been a good rule becomes less suitable.

Rahamim is able to see what is appropriate each moment and apply the best response. It is a blend of any amount of Chesed or Gevurah to fit the situation.

When we ask for something, of course we like to hear “yes,” but sometimes it’s actually more merciful for God to say “no.” The reply depends on the larger picture.

In the world before this one, the ancient world of “Tohu,” there was great contrast. Things were either complete sweetness or total restriction and destruction. A world of extremes. Things were black or white, no shades of grey. This contrast was too much for our vessels. The vessels shattered. It was chaos.

Then came the next chapter in the cosmic dream, the world of “Tikkun” (“repair”), where we are now. Here you can have very cold water and very hot water mixing together into the sink. This we can handle. Our vessels can handle this blending much better.

Rahamim allows this blending. Every response may be a different blend of hot and cold. Rahamim mixes Gevurah and Chesed. It’s a mixing bowl.
Rahamim is the very quality that lets us repair the world.

So when we use this prayer, “Harachaman rahem alai,” we are saying not only “Bring balance to me, God” – we are also saying, “Help me bring balance to the world.”

For example, my child asks me for a third ice cream cone. What’s my response? I know he wants it, but the best answer is No. That looks like Gevurah (strictness) to him. But really it is Rahamim, balance with intelligence and love, because it is to prevent the child from a stomachache.

Or let’s say you visit someone in the hospital, and they are miserable. Is it your best approach to go in and cry with them? No. Neither can you walk in and tell jokes. You bring your mixing bowl. You bring Rahamim: mercy with intelligence, a blend of Gevurah (discipline, strength) and Chesed (loving-kindness).

Comment: It is a comfort to know that Mercy is pouring upon us, with all the destruction of that horrendous earthquake this week. It’s difficult to hear about this suffering.

Oh, yes. Suffering is real. You can’t tell the sufferer to look beyond their pain. They can’t do that. You would feel just as bad if you were in their place.

For your sick friend in the hospital, when you face this situation with Rahamim, you don’t need words. You don’t need to verbally support, defend, or avert their worries. You can just reach out and hold their hand. You bring love. You bring balance and mercy – Rahamim.

When you simply hold their hand, you bypass the whole ping-pong of thoughts that ask, “Will I get better? Won’t I get better?” You don’t even get into that.

You just offer your love.

Give Attention with the Heart and Light up the World

We know about paying attention, like paying attention to the teacher in the classroom. There’s a difference between ordinary paying attention and offering loving attention.

Feel the difference for yourself.
We offer loving attention with our heart, not our mind.
It is the ability to connect with our heart, not with our mind.
Engage in loving attention and see if you can get a stronger feel for it.

Darkness is the opposing force to light and love. Our sages tell us darkness is the force of illusion. The biggest place to find it is in this physical world of “Assiyah.” In fact they call this the world of illusion, the False World.

But keeping your flame lit dispels illusion.

It’s like in the movie house, when there’s plenty of darkness, you see and engage with the drama on the screen. You think the movie is real.
But when light arrives, it’s like the house lights are turned up, and the movie disappears. The illusions disappear.

In the place of light there are no more illusions.

Many people live with the movie, however.
They are invested in desires and fears, running after desires and hiding from fears.
This can go on for lifetimes. It does not matter.

Eventually the person will become aware that their desires and fears are illusions.
When this is revealed, it comes with the knowing that these things always were illusions.

So your good deeds light up the world and light up the fire in your heart.

However – sometimes service becomes a burden. When we have tons of work to do for others, our ordinary eyes see overwhelm in our life.

Yet the flame in your heart tells you that service is the whole reason you are here on the earth. Service and good deeds are the fuel for the fire in your heart.

There’s a story about a man in Europe who started a charity fund that grew larger and larger until it was difficult to handle all the duties of that. He didn’t know what to do. It was getting to be too much. His wife suggested that he go ask the Chofetz Chaim what to do. (Rabbi Yisrael Meir Kagan of the Mussar movement, died 1933.)
So the man traveled to a town in Poland at that time to see the Chofetz Chaim.
When he walked into the Rebbe’s home, the Chofetz Chaim was just finishing his supper, saying the final prayer. The prayer says “goodness and kindness chase me all the days of my life.”

Right then and there the Rebbe turned to the man and explained to him, “Your good deeds will chase you all the days of your life.” The message was to keep serving in the way he had been doing.

We should continue serving because we light up the world.
This is our purpose in being here.

Reflections on Daas, Elijah, and the Garden of Eden

Esoteric discussion with Isaac –

Question: Recently you did a teaching about unblocking the throat and allowing energy to flow through it. I found that so helpful. Would you review that?

The throat is the location of “Daas,” where all attributes may be united as one. This connection doesn’t happen through ordinary speech, but through spiritual speech. Singing spiritual songs opens the throat and provides this connection. Giving speeches about spirituality leads to “Daas,” as well.

Have you ever noticed, when you’re thinking about something that’s bothering you, the more you examine it and listen to yourself internally, you sink deeper into confusion? But if you speak it out loud to someone, suddenly clarity comes in. You get new insights just by speaking it out loud. This is because the aspect of “Daas” is active when you open the throat and speak aloud.
(Daas is also known as Da’at.)

Question: Does this topic have anything to do with those saints and yogis who received sweet nectar coming down at the back of the tongue?

Not directly, but we know this nectar is a real experience that has happened to those adepts. This is not for us ordinary people, but it does happen to a select few who have managed to progress to an extreme degree.

In the Torah they speak about people who lived four hundred years or six hundred years. We tend to think that’s an odd exaggeration. It can’t happen, right? But it truly did happen. They did live that long, because they had shifted from the biochemical body to the electric body. They were living from the Tree of Life, living from the Light.

And they weren’t trying to live long to avoid death. They were comfortable with death. There were other reasons for them to keep living so long.

Even now we have some people living that long, hundreds of years. They don’t want to be known, but they do exist.

Elijah transformed from a flesh body to a light body. He never died. He is still roaming from world to world, wherever he is needed. If he needs a physical body to do his job of the moment, then a physical body is instantaneously manifested for him. Our teachers speak about Elijah “hopping” from realm to realm.

Question: Please say more about the Garden of Eden. Adam and Eve were told not to eat of the Tree of Knowledge?

The Tree of Knowledge represents Duality, which is the lowest realm.
The Tree of Life is Unity with God.

In the beginning Adam and Eve had bodies of light. This would be like astral bodies. Not physical bodies. They lived at the same level as the Tree of Life. They were made of Light.

The Tree of Knowledge, of Duality, was below them. When they wanted to eat from it, in effect they fell into that lower dimension. When they fell, they immediately took on physical bodies. From that point on they were in the physical realm.

Question: And what about the cherub and the two flaming swords guarding the way back to Paradise?

The swords are crossed and pointing down. When they say “flaming” – that’s only one way to interpret the Hebrew, and it’s not accurate. The translation of that word really means “inverted.” The swords are inverted upside-down. And they are revolving.

This is to teach us that we must invert ourselves, we must revolve ourselves, we must change a lot in order to return to Paradise.

We need to shift from our physical biochemical body to our light body. Shift our priorities away from this lower realm to the higher realms.

Question: And what was the fruit Adam and Eve ate?

Not an apple. On the Tree of Knowledge the fruit is “thinking.” When we indulge in thinking, categorizing, separating, we eat the fruit of Knowledge of Good and Evil – Duality.

How to Use the Four Worlds and How They Live in You

You can say your prayer silently, but our rabbis say it aloud.
They focus thought and speech together.
They teach that thought and speech are male and female. When put together, these two give birth to feeling and action.

When you say your prayer aloud with vigor in your voice and heart, you engage in the strongest divine connection, which will unfold in feeling and action for the highest good of all.

The leader of the Hasidic movement, the Baal Shem Tov, brought deep sacred energy to his conversations with the Divine. He was given the gift of holy speech, speaking things into being. He and his students would step into a horse-drawn carriage, and within a moment they would arrive in a town five hundred miles away. They called this The Folding of the Way. It happened more than once.

These four: thought, speech, feeling, and action (physicality) are in fact the four worlds.

They also signify the four letters of the name of God.

In giving your attention, giving your heart fully to your prayer, you have expressed the full name of God and all realms.

The four worlds, or four fields, exist within you, too.

You could do a meditation, asking God to fill each level of you with highest Light.
First the field of thought . . . (Dear God please fill my thought with the highest Light.)
then speech . . .
then emotion . . .
and then physicality.

You may find these four fields collapse into each other, like a telescope folding itself up within you. All four together melt into Divine Light.

We don’t know how to make this work. God knows how. We are totally dependent.

When we come to rely fully on God, then we won’t die alone.

You hold your loved ones’ hands as you die, but you don’t want to take them with you where you’re going.
You feel like you’re going alone, but you’re not.
God takes your hand and lifts you.
